A Nebula Was Born

The Eastern Veil Nebula, a stunning remnant of a massive supernova explosion, was formed around 10,000 to 20,000 years ago when a star roughly 20 times the mass of our Sun reached the end of its life in a dramatic and violent burst. Located approximately 1,500 light-years away in the constellation of Cygnus, this celestial structure is a delicate tapestry of glowing ionized gas, showcasing brilliant filaments of hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. The explosive force that created the Eastern Veil Nebula scattered stellar material across space, creating an intricate web of interstellar clouds that continue to expand, revealing the beauty and power of cosmic evolution.

Staring for 3 nights!

To capture this image I had to lock my telescope at the nebula for three nights. I had to fight against clouds and changes in the atmosphere. I used a precise robotic tracking mount that follows the movement of the stars and an astronomy camera that cools the image sensor below freezing to eliminate noise. I used narrowband filters which allowed me to capture the light emitted by only the hydrogen and oxygen gas from the nebula minus the city lights. I capture over 7 hours of exposure and in the end processed the best 5 hours out of that. I then spent many hours processing the data to finally reveal this beautiful image.

  • His lunar photography is absolutely stunning! I love seeing the composites he creates from his home made telescope/camera! His digital wallpapers are phenomenal quality, perfectly cropped versions for phone, tablet, and desktop of so many of his shots! Amazing value. I purchased "Golden Hour" from his first print sale and couldn't be happier with the quality and vibrancy - the framing and shipping were very well handled!
